SEOPress integration

Available in:Pro

If your site uses SEOPress, HappenBoard Pro adds three things to it. You can put event details in SEOPress title and description templates, add an Events level to SEOPress breadcrumbs, and keep finished events out of search results.

The SEOPress integration needs HappenBoard Pro. See what Pro adds.

Turn the features on

  1. Go to HappenBoard → Integrations.
  2. On the SEOPress (Pro) card, click Configure.
  3. Read the notice at the top. It says whether SEOPress Free or SEOPress Pro was found, or offers an Install SEOPress link.
  4. Set the three switches, then click Save changes.
SettingWhat it doesDefault
Register %%happenboard_event_*%% dynamic variablesAdds ten event variables to SEOPress templates. On
Inject HappenBoard crumbs into SEOPress breadcrumbsAdds Events and the event’s category to SEOPress breadcrumbs. Needs SEOPress Pro.On

On a site without SEOPress, these switches do nothing, so leaving them on causes no harm.

Use event details in titles and descriptions

A variable is a placeholder that SEOPress replaces with real data on each page. With the HappenBoard variables, every event page can get its own title without editing events one by one.

  1. Go to SEO → Titles & Metas and open the settings for single post types.
  2. Find Events.
  3. In the title or meta description template, add a HappenBoard variable from SEOPress’s variable menu, or type it.
  4. Save your changes.

For example, the template %%post_title%% on %%happenboard_event_start_date%% in %%happenboard_event_venue_city%% gives a title like “Yoga class on July 28, 2026 in Nantes”.

VariableShows
%%happenboard_event_start%%The start date and time
%%happenboard_event_start_date%%The start date
%%happenboard_event_start_time%%The start time
%%happenboard_event_end%%The end date and time
%%happenboard_event_duration%%The duration, such as “2 hours”
%%happenboard_event_venue%%The venue name
%%happenboard_event_venue_city%%The venue’s city
%%happenboard_event_organizer%%The organizer name
%%happenboard_event_categories%%The categories, in alphabetical order, separated by commas
%%happenboard_event_seats_left%%The seats left (see below)

What to know before you use them:

  • Dates and times follow your site’s date format, time format and time zone.
  • The venue and organizer are the ones linked to the event, in the page’s language. Without a linked one, the name typed on the event is used. The city only comes from a linked venue.
  • On a recurring event, the start, end and duration are those of the first date of the series.
  • On an all-day event, the time shows as midnight. Use the date-only variable there.
  • The seats variable gives the event’s capacity minus the confirmed seats, and is empty when the event has no capacity. On a recurring event, it counts the date under way, or else the next one.
  • Outside an event page, every HappenBoard variable is empty. A template shared with other pages never shows raw %% text.

Add an Events level to breadcrumbs

Breadcrumbs are the trail of links at the top of a page that shows where it sits on your site. With Inject HappenBoard crumbs into SEOPress breadcrumbs on, HappenBoard completes SEOPress Pro’s trail:

PageTrail
An eventHome › Events › Category › Event title
An event categoryHome › Events › Parent category › Category
The events archiveHome › Events

An event shows one category only: the first in alphabetical order. HappenBoard never adds a level SEOPress already shows. If your SEOPress settings already add the events archive or the event’s categories, they are not repeated. The breadcrumb structured data SEOPress prints stays valid.

This needs SEOPress Pro, with its breadcrumbs turned on and shown on your pages. With SEOPress Free only, the switch is greyed out.

Keep finished events out of search results

A calendar that runs for years builds up hundreds of finished events. With Auto-noindex past events on, an event page gets noindex, follow once all its dates are over. Search engines drop the page from their results but still follow its links.

  • A one-off event is marked once it has ended.
  • A recurring event is marked only after its last date has ended. A series with a date in progress or still to come stays indexed, and so does a series with no end.

The archive and category pages are not affected. The instruction goes into the robots tag SEOPress prints, or into WordPress’s own when SEOPress’s Titles & Metas module is off.

The option is off by default because it changes how an existing site is indexed.

Event structured data

The Event structured data comes from the free plugin and is printed on every event page, whatever the settings above. If you add an Event schema by hand to an event in SEOPress Pro, HappenBoard prints none on that page, so it never carries two.
