A weekly class, a monthly meetup, an annual fair: instead of publishing the same event over and over, you describe how it repeats once and HappenBoard generates every date.
Turning repetition on
Open the event and find the Recurrence panel in the sidebar. It starts with a single switch, Repeat this event. Everything else appears once that switch is on. The same builder is used in the Recurrence section of the add-event form on the HappenBoard admin screens, so the steps below apply in both places.
The rule always repeats from the event’s own start date and time, so set the start before you build the rule.
Frequency and interval
Frequency is a dropdown with four choices, and only four: Daily, Weekly, Monthly and Yearly. There is nothing hourly, and nothing narrower than a day.
Under it, a slider labelled Every N weeks sets the gap between repeats. Its unit follows the frequency, so it reads days, weeks, months or years to match. The range is 1 to 30. Leave it at 1 for every week, set it to 2 for every other week, and so on.
Monthly and yearly rules simply repeat from the start date. The builder has no option for the fourth Thursday of a month or for a fixed day number, so pick a start date that already falls where you want the series to land.
Choosing weekdays
When the frequency is Weekly, a Repeat on row appears with seven buttons, one per day from Monday to Sunday. Selected days stay highlighted. Choose Monday and Wednesday and the event runs twice a week.
This row exists for weekly rules only. Switch to daily, monthly or yearly and it disappears, along with any weekday selection you had made.
When the series ends
Ends is a set of three radio buttons.
- Never: the rule has no stated end.
- After a number of occurrences: reveals a Number of occurrences slider, from 1 to 365.
- On a specific date: reveals an End date picker.
A rule can carry a count or an end date, never both. The radio buttons make that impossible to get wrong in the builder, and a rule written by hand with both is rejected outright rather than half-applied.
Reading the rule
At the bottom of the panel, a small box shows the rule the builder just wrote, in the standard calendar format: something like FREQ=WEEKLY;INTERVAL=2;BYDAY=MO,WE;COUNT=10. It updates as you change the controls. You do not have to understand it, but it is the quickest way to confirm the rule says what you meant, and it is the same syntax other calendar applications use.
Two details are worth knowing. The interval is only written into the rule when it is above 1, and the weekday list is only written for weekly rules.
Limits
- A series stops at 1000 dates. A rule set to never end still stops there.
- Only the four frequencies above are accepted. A rule using anything else is refused.
- If a rule cannot be read at all, the event falls back to a single date at its start, so it never vanishes from your calendar.
Changing a rule later
Editing the rule and saving rebuilds every date of the series from scratch. Dates you had previously skipped or moved are re-applied afterwards, as long as the new rule still produces the date they were attached to. Change the frequency and those adjustments no longer have anything to attach to.
On the event page you build block by block, a series can list all its dates, and the admin Calendar screen shows each generated date as its own chip.
